Honeysmack

David Haberfeld, known professionally as Honeysmack, is a pioneer of Australia’s electronic and techno scenes, renowned for his raw, improvisational hardware-based live sets, blending acid, techno and experimental sounds. Emerging from the underground techno scene of the 1990s, Honeysmack has stayed true to his roots, continuing to push the boundaries of live electronic music while remaining firmly embedded in the culture that shaped him. His commitment is reflected in his fiercely independent approach and his enduring presence in the community for over three decades. Bringing a punk rock philosophy to live techno, Honeysmack thrives on spontaneity, energy, and a hands-on approach to music-making. Rejecting rigid pre-programmed sets, his performances are a high-voltage fusion of chaos and control, embracing the unpredictability of analogue hardware and real-time improvisation. His rebellious spirit stands out, proving that techno can be as visceral and immediate as a live rock show. Unlike DJing, where pre-recorded tracks are mixed, Honeysmack’s practice is rooted in creating music live on the spot. Using drum machines, synthesizers, and modular gear, he crafts dynamic, evolving soundscapes in real time— no pre-made tracks, no safety nets. Each performance is unique, driven by instinct and interaction with the machines, making his approach closer to that of a live band than a traditional DJ set. Always evolving, Honeysmack continues to push boundaries and challenge conventions, proving that the future of techno is truly live, fearless, and forward-thinking as ever.
