FACILITATORS

Host

Rainbow Chan

Rainbow Chan is an award-winning vocalist, producer and multi-disciplinary artist. Driven by a DIY spirit, Chan melds catchy melodies and off-kilter beats made up of field-recordings and found sounds. Both heartbreaking and tender, her idiosyncratic brand of pop reflects diasporic experiences and deeply personal tales of love and loss.

Host

Mayari

Mayari is a multidisciplinary producer and performer creating ethereal, beat-driven electronic music, inspired by her liminal perspective that flows between Indigenous and Western worldviews. She has performed across as part of Now or Never Festival, Hardware Theory, Signals Ambient, AsiaTOPA, and her self-curated Ethereal Club. Mayari’s work has been featured on RRR, PBS, FBi, and Area 3000, and as a lover of all genres, her earlier pop project under Ali Adriano was selected by Nick Littlemore (Empire of the Sun) as the winner of Triple J’s songwriting competition.

PLAYBACK

COMMUNITY

Do you make music and wish you could hear it on a big sound system?

Playback creates a space for music makers to hear their works on an amplified sound system in a supportive and educational setting.

Many music makers don't get the opportunity to hear how their sounds will translate in final environments such as clubs, cinemas, or under heavy amplification. This is because access to larger systems, such as those found in clubs, are hard to come by. Playback aims to bring this opportunity to the Melbourne music community whilst facilitating the opportunity to share with, learn from, and connect with peers.

Anyone is welcome to submit a track to Playback. We welcome music makers of all abilities, genres, and backgrounds to the program. Even if you are not submitting music we welcome you to join a session to see what it's all about or support a friend.

Our aim is to lift the community and allow music makers to improve their practice by listening in a new environment.

Stay in touch?

Playback takes place on the lands of the Wurundjeri and Woi Wurrung people. We recognise that music has been created and shared on this country for thousands of generations. We would like to pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging, and welcome any First Nations people to our events.
